Project Description

Tasked with developing an interactive product, I decided to tackle a problem that most people struggle with - staying off of their phones. My process included research on existing solutions, multiple rounds of ideation, low and medium fidelity prototyping, and finally developing the form for my final vision.

My ideas started directly at source with phone cases that could prevent you from being on your phone for too long.

As I thought about these ideas, however, I realized they would likely be too bulky to comfortably carry around in a pocket, so I made a shift to a pad that could track how long you’ve had your phone in hand.

Prototyping

Using some cardboard and tape to quickly put together a low-fi prototype, I was able to test out my electronic components and successfully prove out my concept.

Next, I modeled a more refined design to align the internal components and prepare to 3D print a higher fidelity prototype.

3D Prints

My first attempt went relatively well, but the large clearance between the platform and bottom housing as well as instability of the springs caused issued with the pressure sensing abilities. By reprinting a larger platform and adding spring guides to my design, I was able to achieve the stability and effectiveness I desired.
